The Legend of Princess Donají



The story goes that the Zapotec king and queen Cosijoeza Coloyocaltzin had a son, Cosijopi , who was sent to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec to rule. Cosijopi had a daughter , Princess Donají , pronounced in soft Donashí Zapotec . In those days there were constant wars between the Zapotecs , who settled in Zaachila , political capital of the Zapotec and Mixtec , who settled in Monte Albán after the Zapotecs abandoned there. The Mixtecs attacked Zaachila and to end the war , took the princess hostage Donají peace . Then fought the Zapotec Monte Alban, and for being a sudden attack , fled the Mixtec and decapitated princess Donají . After that, they confessed only place where they buried the body , but never said where the head was , which remained secret giving birth to the legend.

The legend of Princess Donají says a shepherd who tended his animals in what is now known as San Agustin de las Juntas , near the international airport in the city of Oaxaca , found a wild lily , also known as lily flower , and only instead of cutting from the stem , decided uproot . When digging could see a human ear , then the full head which is said to be preserved intact and owned by Princess Donají . It was recognized by rich decorations presented . Later, both body and head were buried in the temple of Cuilapan . It is believed that this was due to the importance of the character to attract loyal devotees Catholicism. In fact the princess was baptized as Juana Cortés.
